Course Details
Enlisting qualified professionals, the Mandarin Studies & Culture Center at Ming Chuan University follows a course schedule that begins with simple material and gradually delves into the more difficult. With an emphasis on developing Chinese vocabulary and speech used in everyday life, the classes themselves are casual and relaxed, encouraging students to practice speaking frequently and strengthening their basic speaking and listening ability. Using complementary pictures creates total language immersion, which allows students to overcome any fears of putting the language to use, and allows students to maintain their interest in and passion for their language studies. The courses are conducted in blocks of 3 hours per day/ 15 hours per week intensive classes, allowing students to cultivate a foundation in practical conversation ability by using experiences from their daily life.

Mandarin vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure (華語詞彙語法教學及華語句型練習) | The aim of this course is to assist students to grasp the fundamental syntax and vocabulary of everyday Mandarin. Students who have completed this course should have acquired a basic foundation in the grammatical system of the Mandarin and be able to apply this in their daily lives. In addition to teaching grammatical construction, instructors will also correct students’ grammatical errors, increasing the applicability of the Mandarin by helping students to understand the differences between the syntax of their mother language and that of Mandarin. | Required Courses |
Mandarin conversation and spoken expression (華語會話教學及口語表達練習) | The aim of this conversation class is to help students acquire basic conversation ability and technique, acquire the ability to participate in daily conversation and cultivate conversational ability in special fields such as Business Mandarin; Mandarin of Science and Technology etc. By creating a total language immersion environment and increasing the practice of spoken Mandarin as the leading role of the course instruction, instructors also use vivid yet original materials to teach students. | |
Introduction to Chinese/ Taiwanese Culture and Social Customs (中華/台灣文化及風俗習慣簡介) | Emphasizing linguistic knowledge and technique while overlooking the cultural significance of the language will not lead to a comprehensive understanding of Chinese tongue and culture. Therefore this class extracts the cultural component and introduces it to the students starting from the grammatically complex and moving through to simpler content. Accompanying with courses like complimentary phonemes, syntax and conversation, allowing students to more adeptly and pleasurably acquire good study habits and yield twice the result with half the effort. | |
Chinese E-learning resources and related supplements (華語e化學習資源教學及相關教材補充) | Whether it is revising materials already covered in class, self-motivated study after classes, or searching for answers to questions they have come upon with during their studies on the internet, E-learning classes can help students to continue studying in their spare time without breach. The course instructs students how to search on the internet for Mandarin related materials, and helps them to become comfortable with Mandarin input method. This allows students to develop their formal writing skills, and expand their Mandarin input ability so that they can adapt to contemporary manners of cross-national communication. |
Class Level Arrangement
(1) Beginner to Basic level:
- Target Level: Students who are learning Mandarin for the first time.
- Study Aims: Competency in basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in five major areas of everyday life: food; clothing; accommodation; transportation and entertainment.
(2) Basic to Intermediate level:
- Target Level: Students who have already completed Beginner level, or possess equivalent listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
- Study Aims: To develop an understanding of Chinese culture and the philosophy of the Chinese people. The course focuses on introducing and appreciating Chinese literature; such as specifically verse, prose, fiction and drama. Through this medium imparting a clearer understanding of Chinese philosophy and experiencing the beauty of Chinese Culture.
(3) Intermediate to Advanced level:
- Target Level: Students who have already completed Intermediate level, or who possess equivalent reading skills and have the ability to fluently express themselves in Mandarin.
- Study Aims: The principal aim of this course is to allow students to experience Chinese culture and ideology by penetrating the historical and cultural heart of China’s ancient crafts; to mould a sophisticated student of Mandarin language.
